The Overview
In October 2001, Toronto City Council approved the installation of a permanent memorial to Pierre Elliot Trudeau in a prominent public site, at the foot of Spadina Avenue, on the lakefront. This has the potential to become a major Toronto landmark. A national competition was conducted for the design concept of the park. The judging panel of Alexandre Trudeau, Charles Pachter, Louise Dompierre (Art Gallery of Hamilton), Denise LeClerc (National Gallery of Canada) and Mark Reid (Urban Strategies Inc) selected “a path, a muse taken” in May 2003. "Trudeau Memorial Park" is being commissioned by Toronto Culture. To find our more about the City of Toronto Public Art and Monuments program, go to

The Inspiration
“a path, a muse taken”, by artist Stephen Cruise, is not a stand alone memorial but rather an entire park with important interconnected elements that reflect the life of Mr. Trudeau. According to the artist, “His accomplishments have established a legacy forever carved into the history of our country … an imprinting of the spirit and conviction.”
